Frequently Asked Questions

Can iPhone and Android friends use HeartRay together?+

Yes. HeartRay brings private heart-rate sharing, location sharing and messages into one circle on iPhone and Android. Approved friends choose what to share person by person. A friend can view shared readings in the phone app without a smartwatch.

Do I need a smartwatch?+

No. Supported readings can sync from Apple Health or Health Connect. The Apple Watch companion reads existing heart-rate measurements when available; it does not take continuous measurements. Compatible Wear OS watches can also share readings during a user-started session. Maps, status notes, history, and shared friend data work without a watch.

How do I add someone?+

On Today, tap +, then share your one-time invite code or enter theirs. Connections are private: whoever uses a code sends a request, and you accept it. Nobody can search for or find you.

Why is my heart rate missing?+

Check these first:

  • If you use a watch, check that it is connected and worn; start a sharing session on Wear OS
  • Apple Health or Health Connect permissions are enabled for HeartRay
  • Heart Rate sharing is on for that friend in Me › Who sees what
  • On iPhone, Background App Refresh is enabled
  • A recent heart-rate measurement exists in Apple Health or Health Connect; opening HeartRay does not force a new measurement

Can I control sharing by signal?+

Yes. In Me › Who sees what, heart rate, location, route history, and vitals each have their own switch, and you choose person by person, so you share only what feels right. Nothing is shared until you turn it on.

How do I share a trip?+

On the Map, tap Share my trip, or open a friend’s page and tap Share my trip with them. Pick where you’re going, how you’re getting there and who can follow, then tap Share trip. Your friends see your arrival time on their Lock Screen or in a notification until you arrive. End it any time from the Map, or with End trip in the Android notification.

Why did an arrival time change?+

When the traveler uses an iPhone, the time comes from Apple Maps on their phone and changes with traffic. When that time isn’t current, or when they use Android, it’s an estimate from the distance left and their pace, shown as “about”. Updates arrive about once a minute while the traveler moves.

How do updates reach my friends?+

Once you turn a signal on for someone, their app shows your new stamps and tickets as updates become available — HeartRay does not force a new heart-rate measurement or guarantee continuous updates. Always check the measurement timestamp shown next to each reading.

Troubleshooting

Battery usage feels high+

To reduce battery usage:

  • Pause location sharing in Who sees what when you finish sharing
  • End a shared trip when it is complete
  • Stop a Wear OS heart-rate sharing session when you finish

A friend's data is stale+

Ask them to open HeartRay briefly and verify their health permissions and sharing toggles. Check the measurement timestamp: Apple Watch decides when to take readings, and syncing an older reading does not make it a new measurement. HeartRay is not an emergency-monitoring service.

I am not getting alert notifications+

Verify these settings:

  • Notifications are enabled for HeartRay on your phone
  • An alert threshold is configured on that friend
  • That friend is actively sharing heart rate
